The Operations Director asked me to step aside for a moment. In a subdued voice he said "No one ever comes in here to chat about how we're doing". "You know I'm a good guy, how come no one will speak to me?" -- Indeed he was, but he was also an analytic and dispassionate. He was an Operations Director accustomed to managing by the minutia in reports, not at all charismatic; he so irritated his employees with his reclusive behavior that no one was comfortable around him.
There was an interminable wait for a response on his terminal. Aware of the criticism of his helpdesk, he walked into the bullpen. He left satisfied. They had worked quickly and carefully sorted through his problem. He left convinced that the client criticisms were unfounded. -- Caller ID notwithstanding, he had passed up an opportunity to experience the queue.
The question was innocently posed. Who on the Operations Staff was responsible for Client Satisfaction? Who was that single person focal point? The heads swiveled, puzzled looks on their faces but there was silence. The Director relieved the apprehension by pointing to a specific manager. The response was news to everyone in the room but no one was more surprised than the manager he selected. -- The corporate data center had been in existence for two decades, this team in place for five years, yet the topic was novel.
There is no better way to gain an insight into your business unit than simply asking the management team. Their problem insights and solution suggestions are invaluable.
